I think one of the biggest problems people have when they enter 0.0 is that they want to be prepared, but they have no idea how. I keep hearing about newer players who save up for that new extra-tough (compared to their frig) cruiser. They save up their empire mining profits for a week, grab the biggest ship they can fit, load it up for battle and off they go. Unfortunately, you really can't plow head first into an alliance's territory without a good amount of skill and experience under your belt and hope to survive. Your first trip out shouldn't be in the slowest ship you can get your hands on and loaded to the gills with weapons and damage mods. You'll just go pop at the first camped gate.
Boss had the right idea. Hop in a shuttle, make sure your clone is updated, and go do some scouting. Or, if you can fly one, covert ops frigs are the ultimate tool for entering and exploring hostile territory. And when you feel ready to bring out something bigger, do so with caution. Fit for running away (stabs) and tanking. Your damage means nothing when there's 6 members of a PvP alliance chasing you. The other thing to keep in mind is that the first 10 or so systems into 0.0 from empire WILL be pirate infested. Not might, will. Guranteed. Plan accordingly. Don't go 2 jumps in and start exploring because you're going to run into too many people and die. But once you make it past there, you're home free. If you're in hostile territory, check the map whenever you get a chance and color stars by number pilots in space. You'll quickly notice that most of 0.0 is totaly empty. Once you get out a ways, you could operate for hours without ever seeing another player.
I guess the moral of the story is... If you're interested in 0.0, you're ready for 0.0. If you just tried to enter and lost your most valuable ship, then you just learned a good lesson. Grab something cheaper and faster and try again. You don't need 5mil sp and a battleship. In fact, entering 0.0 in a battleship with an unexperienced character is like painting a big target on your head. I have a friend who flew out to 0.0 in a burst. He spent the next 2 weeks mining completely on his own in nothin but his burst. I believe he flew back to empire with about 400 mil in mins when he finaly found someone who would sell him an industrial. That's what persistance and a lack of fear gets ya.
